Dueling pianos are pure fun. Two musicians go all-out with their craft, and somewhere in the midst of this inherent competition, a whole new sound is born that?s larger than either player could produce himself.People vs. Places is a new photo blog along the same lines. Creators Stephanie Bassos and Timothy Burkhart each carry a camera with them all the time. Their photos end up on the site. But rather tha...

Another day, another crazy patent. DomainNameWire has the story that GoDaddy has successfully received a patent on "Announcing a domain name registration on a social website." The patent, 8,276,057, was filed back in September of 2009. Take a look at the claims for yourself to understand exactly what's being claimed, but reading through them, I'm at a complete loss as to how this is considered worthy of ...

Blueprints are cool for the same reason a lot of art is cool. You can?t quite wrap your head around what you?re looking at. It?s something clearly full of planning and purpose, but there?s too much going on. Swallowing the whole thing in one single bite is just a bit too much for the human mind to digest.
Maybe this is why the latest work by Robert Strati is so fascinating. He mixes detailed schematics with abstract art, combining topics from music to astrophysics and hot air balloons in intense diagrams that constantly sidestep literality.

Rambus Inc. is back in the news again as some of its questionable pre-litigation tactics have been highlighted by another company on the receiving end of a patent infringement lawsuit. Rambus Inc. sued SK Hynix and several other chip builders at the beginning of 2000, claiming to hold the rights to certain DRAM technology. Rambus is perhaps best known for a move that took place well over a decade ago, shortly before it went into the innovation-via-litigation business. On Friday, Whyte found that Rambus destroyed documents when it anticipated litigation. Specifically, Whyte said, Rambus employees were t...

I know two things about Bob Dylan. First, my father loves him and thinks he's the kind of lyrical mastermind that makes puppies weep or something. Second, man does that guy like to contradict himself. Mike recently wrote up a more general piece about how copyright law goes against how we as a people create and mentioned in passing how Bob Dylan is often cited as a gift bestowed upon the masses by copyright, despite his appropriation of others' work in his lyrics. Well guess what, Mike? Bob Dylan thinks you're a pussy!Yes, reader redrum writes in about a wonderful story in which

With the simultaneous efforts to both assert fair use as a right of the public and the government's aim to limit its application, I always find it interesting to watch creators' attitudes and reactions to the complicated navigation of using copyrighted material in their own works. One might say it's like trying to get through a bush maze in the dead of winter. Often times the threat of legal action simply kills off a film that would have otherwise been made, or du...

Virtually all of the masterpieces of modern architecture have one thing in common: They?re constructed, at least in part, of concrete. Popularly maligned as the stuff of ugly, depressing housing blocks or cold industrial buildings, the material has also enabled the best designers to create the most breathtaking structures of the last century, from Le Corbusier?s Villa Savoye and Frank Lloyd Wright?s Fallingwater to Oscar Niemeyer?s Brasilia and Tadao Ando?s Church of the Light. Those and many other Modernist landmarks are represented in Concrete, a new book from Phaidon ...

While the feds absolutely hate to reveal this kind of info, due to successful legal action by the ACLU, the Justice Department was forced to reveal information on how often they monitor electronic communications of Americans without a warrant -- using what's known as "pen register" and "trap and trace." This kind of surveillance isn't over the actual communications (that's left up to the NSA, apparently), but rather just the info on who contacted whom. For various reasons, such information is considered obtainable without needing a warrant. Not surprisingly, the data shows a rather massive increase in such surveillance by the Justice Departm...

While most people have been taught to fear and loathe bacteria and other microscopic organisms (just watch some soap commercials), healthy people actually carry around more bacterial cells with them than their own human cells. It's estimated that there are ten times as many bacterial cells on a typical person than the number of cells that carry a person's own genetic code. About 100 trillion microscopic life forms usually live peacefully on (or in) our bodies, but the microbes that cause disease make us suspicious of all of them. In our battle to defeat the bad guys, though, we should be careful to limit the collateral damage. Here are just a few projects working on fighting "bad" bacteria without killing them all.

There's been a whole lot of talk about openness in government, but so far, very little action. Many vague statements and unkept promises have raised the public's expectation of actually being involved, but when push comes to shove, legislators seem much more comfortable doing things the old, closed-door way.The public has been pushing back against this lack of transparency. The Texas Open Meetings Act requires that most government meetings be open to the general public. There are a few exceptions, but generally speaking, all qualifying meetings must be be...
